Our furling buttons are fashioned from mother of pearl, also called nacre, an organic-inorganic composite material produced by pearl oysters to line the inside of their shells and to coat their pearls.

Mother of pearl is strong and resilient, with an iridescent, rainbow shine.

Buttons are cut from the inner layer of the oyster's shell using a drill press and hole saw.  They are given four holes rather than two to ensure the fastening to the canopy is a strong as possible.
